Kindle Fire 7-inch HDX: Third time's a charm for Amazon's iPad and Nexus killer - ExtremeTech

Kindle Fire HDX, in hand

The 7-inch Kindle Fire HDX is a surprisingly sexy tablet. For $ 230, the same price as the Nexus 7, the Fire HDX comes with the same beautiful screen (1920 × 1080), but a much faster SoC (Snapdragon 800 vs. Snapdragon 600) and Significantly more battery life (about 11 hours vs. . 9) – and the HDX is smaller than the Nexus 7. The caveat, of course, Is that the 7-inch Fire HDX comes with Amazon’s own flavor of Android, Fire OS, while the Nexus 7 comes with a stock version of Android 4.3.

Fortunately, the new version of Fire That OS ships with the HDX is much, much slicker than its predecessor – and if your primary purpose for owning a 7-inch tablet is media consumption, the Fire HDX really is superb. The new Mayday function, whichlets you call Amazon’s excellent customer service department with a couple of presses, is truly revolutionary as well.

When Amazon released the first Kindle Fire just two years ago, it was a clunky beast That left manyusers wanting. It was heavy, cumbersome, the screen was unexciting, and the initial version of Fire Olympics was a pig to use. The Fire HD corrected many of These issues, and now the HDX goes one better, Providing best-in-class hardware, and polished softwarethat can almost hold its own against stock Android and iOS.

In the hand, the 7-inch Fire HDX feels solid and dense, and yet surprisingly light. Unlike the Nexus 7, Which is weirdly long, the HDX has a balanced, same-width bezel around the entire face of the device. The 7-inch HDX was very easy to manipulate with my huge hands, like the Galaxy Note 3, but normal-sized humans might struggle – but hey, it’s a 7-inch device, what do you expect?

The screen is sharp and beautiful, but it did not feel quite in the same league as the (larger) 1920 × 1080 display on the new Surface second The HDX’s display is incredibly overpriced glossy, so I hope you do not mind seeing your own face When flicking through apps and magazines with dark backgrounds.

Finally, the stand-out feature of the new HDX tablets is the Mayday function. By simply sliding down from the top of the screen and hitting the Mayday button, you can call Amazon’s excellent customer service team. Amazon’s Stated response time goal is 15 seconds; for us, it took around 25 seconds for someone to pick up. As you can see in the video above, the customer service representative was knowledgable and courteous. I believe her face was supposed to Appear on-screen, but it sounds like that feature is buggy at the moment. I can see the Mayday function being really, really useful for a lot of tablet users.
