Amazon purchase of Liquavista hints at color Kindle - Wired.co.uk

Amazon has bought e-ink company Liquavista from Samsung sparking speculation That the company is working on a color-Capable version of its Kindle e-reader.

As reported by The Digital Reader , as of 29 April ownership of the company Transferred from Samsung to Amazon with the latters offering the statement:

Liquavista specialises in creating low power-consumption color screen displays so the acquisition hints (rather Heavily) That Amazon is not ding to add a color e-ink version of the Kindle to its line of e-readers.

The technology revolves around electrowetting – a patented process inherited by Liquavista from Philips. Electrowetting displays sandwich layers of water, colored oil and a colored electrodes between glass or plastic. By altering the balance between the electrostatic and surface tensions of the liquids using low voltages of electricity the oil can be spread out to show as a color or pinched into a ball to reveal a plain reflective surface underneath.
