Let’s come out of the Kindle closet and reveal what we’re really reading – The Guardian

‘There’s a gulf between what we are seen to be reading and what we’re really reading.’ Photograph: Sarah Lee for the Guardian

T HE the British reading public are a bunch of hypocrites. A recentchanges list of Waterstone’s top-selling paper books of 2015 Compared with the top 20 ebooks Purchased from Amazon In the same period, HAS revealed the gulf between what we are seen to be reading and what we’re really reading. The real book versus ebook list is like seeing Dorian Grey’s public face right up against his portrait.

While on paper we dole out our wages to prop up the careers of Colm Tóibín, Ian McEwan and Richard Flanagan, what we read on our Kindles is very different. We’re like the American winos, hiding our cheap, nasty, yet oh-so-satisfying liquor in brown paper bags – or the dead gray plastic of a Kindle. We sip fine literary wine in public and neck any old drain clearing hooch When We’re left to our own (e-reading) devices: harrowing first-person accounts of abuse, marshmallowy love stories, gritty killings, True Crime, contemporary commuting -based psychodramas with “girl” and “train” in the title.

We like our fictional characters to be multidimensional (except for Ana Steele from Fifty Shades of Grey, who’s as thick as a post), but as readers we the remain resolutely two-faced. I’m not surprised, though. Who would not be desperate to find out the ending of Dare She Date Again? by Amy Ruttan, in the Mills & amp; Boon Medical Romance line? It’s about a widow, – a paramedic turned air ambulance pilot – who falls for her hunky trainee. Genius.

Related: The Girl on the Train tops Amazon’s UK ebook sales this year so far

And right now in the Amazon Kindle Top 100 I am Excited to See Stone Deep: An Alpha Bad Boy Romance by Tess Oliver and Anna Hart at number 86, and Cover Model Village Devon Hartford at Number 89. Both feature striking cover images of nameless, faceless, oiled beefcake – and, no, I ‘ m not talking about a late-summer barbecue platter from Lidl.

Meanwhile, copies of untouched prize-winning novels languish on our shelves, impressive but remote, like an exhibition of Elizabeth Taylor’s evening dresses. The hardbacks are what we feel we ought to buy, or better yet give as gifts, Which show our high-mindedness while Ensuring That we pass the reading burden on to someone else.

We tout our beautiful Edwardian- Green Virago Classics or zingy orange Penguin Classics, giving a little eye sparkle of recognition to the other person on the train reading That year’s much-admired novel-that-Proves-the-novel-isn’t-dead. We pay for hardback editions of thoughtful, exquisitely written meditations on something or other, Which took years to write.

But They only take a few seconds to shelve and forget. What we really RESPOND to ice the old kiss-kiss-bang-bang, the thrill of the Penny Dreadful, the glitter of the music hall, the big-screen swoon. Well, we yearn in our imaginations; perhaps not in life, where pee-pee etc would disrupt the school run. Your Kindle library is like yourpersonal dark web, the place where your basest instincts and Truest, rawest, subconscious urges settle like slime at the bottom of a forbidding lake. Indeed, Slime at the Bottom of a forbidding Lake is the title of my forthcoming enovel, Which I am generously releasing on to the market for 99p, complete with authentic spelling mistakes, a cover image ripped from Shutterstock and the promise of a sex scene on everypage That does not have a murder on it.

The Real Book versus ebook list is like seeing Dorian Grey’s public face right up against his portrait

Let’s embrace the truth. In our hands we have highly wrought prose about highly wrought Characters and Their personnel, political and cultural issues. In our heads it’s all bums, willies, magic amulets and blood-soaked corpses. I think it’s time to come out of the Kindle closet and admit the strain of Maintaining A Double Life. Time to upload venerable and worthy works on to our e-readers, place them care fully into a drawer and forget about them, then hit WH Smiths at Heathrow Terminal 5 and go crazy buying what we really want.

The fine literary novels can wait for our retirement years, When Natural Resources will be low and we can burn them for fuel. In the meantime, we need to liberate ourselves, Reclaim the misery memoirs, overripe pseudo-medieval swords and sorcery bunk and PG-rated romantic fantasies, and flash That trash with pride.

Amazon Cutting jobs in the hardware division after Fire Phone disaster, says report – Business Insider

Kindle Fire smartphone Jeff Bezos Spencer Platt / Getty Images Jeff Bezos, CEO of Amazon

Amazon laid off “dozens of Engineers “in its Lab126 hardware unit, Which makes consumer devices like the Kindle, Echo, and Fire tablet, the Wall Street Journal is reporting.

This news comes in the wake of the critical and commercial disaster That Was The Amazon Fire Phone, an entry into the highly competitive smartphone market That turned into a huge black-eye for the e-retailer.

Lab126 employs about 3,000 people, so it’s Unlikely That the layoffs – reportedly the first in Lab126′s 11-year history – will ultimately Represent a significant portion of its headcount.

But it signals A Shift in Amazon’s thinking about consumer electronics, as the e-retailer tries to figure out the path ahead.

This year alone, Lab126 HAS Introduced the $ 180 Amazon Echo digital assistant appliance and the Amazon Dash one- button ordering device. The Wall Street Journal’s report indicates That Amazon is overpriced planning a “high-end computer for the kitchen,” kind of like an echo for the culinary-minded.

Some of Amazon’s devices, Such as the Fire Tablet and the Kindle e-reader, havebeen successful.

But That lack of focus and “shifting , and, at times, enigmatic priorities” has suffered to a ton of turn over at Lab126, per the report. Some engineers are Concerned That the main focus of Amazon’s hardware Efforts are right to drive retail purchases from the site, while general morale HAS BEEN low since the Fire Phone laid an egg so publicly.

Earlier In August, top Lab126 engineer Jon McCormack left to take a job with Google for undisclosed Reasons After an on-again-off-again six-year employment with Amazon, the report says.

In short, it Seems Unlikely That Amazon is getting out of the hardware game Entirely. But expect a lot more weird, crazy ideas as Amazon figures out where it fits into the hardware game, even as its employee churn rate skyrockets.

Amazon Declined to comment on this story.

Disclosure: Jeff Bezos is an investor in Business Insider through his staff investment company, Bezos Expeditions.

The Paperwhite is Amazon’s mid-range Kindle e-reader; it seats between the £ 54 Kindle and £ 170 Voyage, and is priced from £ 99 at the time of writing.

The Kindle trio look back Identical – each is smaller and lighter than a paperback book, measuring 169x119x10 .2mm and weighing around 205g, but the main difference between them Is that all-important screen.

Amazon Kindle Paperwhite: Screenshot improvements

We reviewed the second-generation Paperwhite in December 2013 and were impressed then with the touchscreen, but Amazon HAS made it even better.

The number of pixels HAS DOUBLED to 1448 × 1072, higher even than the Fire HD7 and Fire HD6 tablets. The pixels per inch (PPI) ratio HAS overpriced Increased from 212 to 300, bringing it into line with the higher-priced Voyage.

More pixels Means the text is even sharper – and you really notice the difference. Words are really sharp and Easier to read, and Amazon’s boast That the screen is similar to paper is pretty accurate.

The Paperwhite is the first Kindle to feature a new font created by Amazon Especially for e-readers. The Bookerly font, the company says, has: “a lighter, more graceful look and outperforms other digital reading fonts to help customers read faster with less eyestrain. “

Amazon Kindle Paperwhite 3rd gen

The Paperwhite alsoincludes a new typesetting engine Which Creates more natural spacing.

These features are available on at around a million e-books at launch and will move to more over the coming weeks. It’s hard to tell how much difference a font really makes, but the Paperwhite ice Certainly a pleasure to read.

The Paperwhite’s screen does not adjust or cancel to suit different lighting conditions like that on the Kindle Voyage, but you can adjust the brightness for comfortable reading in different conditions.

Unlike tablets, text on the Kindle’s screen is visible in bright sunlight.

Amazon Kindle Paperwhite: Features

Aside from These usability changes, the functionality of the Kindle Paperwhite HAS not changed at all. With millions of sales, Amazon’s nailed the formula, so any changes will ask Merely tweaks.

You can download books Directly from the Kindle Store, Which HAS over three million books, news papers and magazines using 3G or Wi- f. The Paperwhite HAS 4GB of storage Which is enough to hold Thousands of titles.

The navigation is simple. Tap the right of the screen to move to the next page, left to move back and tap the top to access the menu controls. A feature called X-Ray lets you explore additional information about characters and topics.

Extensive display settings let you adjust the line spacing, font size and margins to your own taste.

If you read Kindle books using a tablet or phone app as well as on the dedicated device, Whispersync records the last page you read across multiple devices.

The battery lasts around six weeks if you read for half an hour a day.

Amazon Kindle Paperwhite: Should you buy it?

If you are looking for a new e-reader then we’d recommend the ‘third generation Paperwhite.

The screen is fantastic; it’s very easy to use and great value – Particularly the wi-fi version Which costs £ 99 or £ 108 (without adverts).

The 3G Kindle Paperwhite, Which includes a built-in SIM card to allow you to download books on-the-go, costs £ 161; that’s quite a lot more money, and more than you’d pay for a tablet like the Tesco Hudl 2 (wi-fi only) Which you can use with the Amazon app .

However tablets are Not designed just for reading books – the Paperwhite’s screen, Bookerly font and battery performance havebeen Designed to Provide the best possible reading experience.

Quatre gigaoctets permettent déjà the stocker des milliers the Commons et autres documents.

Ils sont proposés an option.
