Device encryption can be a great way to keep your data secure in case it falls into the wrong hands. For many users, however, it can be overkill and there’s USUALLY a performance hit to a device that’s been encrypted. Using a PIN code to lock the device is USUALLY an Effective deterrent and software tools like Find My iPhone and Android Device Manager can help track, lock, or wipe lost devices.

Unfortunately for Kindle Fire HDX owners, there’s no app available that’s Comparable to the Find My iPhone or Android Device Manager. If you want to be extra cautious with your data or if you’re using a Kindle Fire HDX in an enterprise environment, here’s how to encrypt it:

Step 1 : Make sure you have the latest version of Fire OS installed, then fully charge your Kindle Fire HDX.

Step 2 : With your Kindle Fire HDX plugged in to a wall charger, go to Settings> Security, then select Encryption.

Step 3 : Tap on the “Encrypt Tablet” button. If your Fire HDX isn’ta fully charged or plugged in, you will not see this option.

Step 4 : If you have a PIN, you’ll need to enter it, then set an encryption password. This password is different than your lockscreen PIN. It will be used Only When you boot up the Kindle Fire HDX.

Step 5 : After you’ve entered your encryption password, tap the “Continue” button to begin the encryption process.

Your Kindle Fire HDX will reboot, then begin encrypting. Depending on the Amount of Data stored on your Kindle Fire HDX, the process could take up to an hour to complete, though our test Kindle only took 12 minutes.

Keep in mind thatthere’s no way to decrypt your Kindle Fire HDX once it’s been encrypted. To remove the encryption, you’ll have to perform a factory reset and erase all your data. Additionally, if the wrong encryption password is entered 30 Consecutive times, your Kindle Fire or cancel HDX will be reset to factory defaults and your data is erased.

Where to get Kindle books for free - Aol Money

20131030-AP Amazon.13.JPG AP

Two months on from Christmas, and many recipients of a Kindle e-reader are discovering That e-books can be an expensive habit. While owning a Kindle means having a good read on hand at all times, it’s not so great for the bank balance, with many e-books only a little cheaper than Their dead-tree counter parts.

The good news, though, is That it’s possible to find an enormous number of Kindle books without paying a penny. And canny users are cottoning on – indeed, a Recent Survey by Ofcom and Kantar Media found That in the UK 61 percent of e-books are read for free.

Even better, you do not even need to own a Kindle device to get These free titles – there are Kindle applications available here to download free for all major smartphones, computers and tablets.

So, once you’re all Kindled up, where are the best places to browse the virtual shelves?

Amazon
The first and most obvious place to look for free books is Amazon itself. However, Clicking on the ‘free books’ tab on the right-hand side only brings up a list of the most popular free titles of the day. This link, though, leads to the full list of free books by searching on ‘£ 0 – £ 0′ as a price.

And what a list it is. There are an astonishing 40.157 titles available right now of every type and genre – Although there’s a bias towards classics Which are out of copyright and self-published novels. It’s worth remembering, though, That the classics are classics for a reason – they’re good.

Books are classified by genre, and some categories are huge: but to avoid having to plow randomly through the list, customers can sort by popularity, date of publication and average customer review score. Around 1,000 new books are added every month. Children’s books are Particularly well-represented, with over 1,000 titles from The Ugly Duckling to The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, as well as plenty of new books.

Some of These titles are available free indefinitely, others only as a time limited sacrifice – these books can be found in a separate listings are here. Most, though, are self-help titles and technical guides.

The Kindle Owners’ Lending Library
Amazon runs its own lending library – but only for users of Amazon prime. This service, Which offers free one-day delivery for more than seven million items from the Amazon store, overpriced gives customers access to more than 350,000 Kindle books for free. Amazon Prime itself is free for the first month and costs £ 49 per year thereafter – soon to go up to £ 79.

Titles include, of course, all the usual out-of-copyright classics – but overpriced many more. The complete list of Harry Potter books is there, for example, alongwith the Hunger Games trilogy and many others of Amazon’s top sellers. Customers can borrow one book a month and keep it as long as They like – though they’re restricted to one at a time.

Project Gutenberg
The other huge source for free Kindle books is Project Gutenberg, founded as a volunteer project in 1971 to Encourage the take-up of electronic books. It now offers nearly 45,000 free books, again with a preponderance of classics.

Right now, the top 100 titles include The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes by Arthur Conan Doyle, The Jungle Book and the Kama Sutra, and more than 50 new titles are added every week. Project Gutenberg is still run by volunteers, and donations are welcomed.

Daily Free Books
If you’ve alreadycreated browsed the main free lists from Amazon, Gutenberg, et al, you May only be interested in new additions. Daily Free Books searches Amazon and U.S. site Smashwords to find new free books as they’re addded, updating its list once an hour. The company overpriced sends out daily emails with a list of the highest-rated books.

British users, though, may FindThatBand not all the books Listed are free in practice, as the site’s set up using U.S. sources . Special offers can vary by country, and differing copyright laws meansthat publishers can not always release a book in every country.

Your local library
Yup, as long as your library has signed up for Amazon’s OverDrive service and you have a library card, you can borrow Kindle books without even leaving home. Around half of public libraries in the UK are members; check your local library website for more information.

There’s a central catalog of over a million books, videos and audiobooks, with individual libraries offering Their Own selection from this list. Depending on the terms set by the publisher, some books can only be downloaded by one person at a time, Whereas others are available for an unlimited number of users Simultaneously.

The big problem for OverDrive in the UK, though, Is that the document format used isn’ta compatible with all Kindle devices. Only the Kindle Fire is supported at the moment, Although anyone can access the books on a PC or mobile device using the Kindle software MENTIONED above.

Happy reading!

Amazon knocks 20% off all Kindle Fire tablets until March 4 - CNET UK

If you’ve been umming and ahhing over Whether to buy a Kindle Fire tablet, this latest Amazon sale could sway you. Until March 4, the retailer is slashing the price of all its tablets by 20 per cent. It does These kinds of sales quite often, but this is the biggest price cut yet.

That means the Kindle Fire HDX will set you back ? 159.20 instead of the usual ? 199, the HDX 8.9 ice ? 263.20 instead of ? 329, the Fire HD ice ? 95.20 instead of ? 119, and the Fire HD 8.9 ice now ? 127.20 instead of ? 159.

Buy any of the above, and you’ll get a free 30-day trial of Amazon Prime, Which includes Amazon Prime Instant Video, Which launches today. This gives you 15,000 films and TV shows to watch, including Alpha House – the first production by Amazon Studios – Which stars John Goodman.

The price of Prime has gone up, Which Amazon is less keen to publicize. It’s now ? 79 for a year instead of ? 49 – that price includes the cost of Prime Instant Video. There’s no way to opt out of Amazon’s new movies and TV service. I’ve seen a few people on Twitter saying they’re quitting Prime Because of the new high price.

The sale price of the Kindle Fire HDX makes it ? 40 cheaper than Google’s Nexus 7, but as the saying goes, look before you leap. The HDX is a nice piece of kit, but its software is sadly hobbled here in the UK, giving you father Fewer features than the competition.

Will you be splashing out on a new tablet in Amazon’s sale? What do you think of it putting up the price of Amazon Prime? Is it a good deal for both services? Or a shameless attempt to push its new streaming offering? Let me know in the comments, or on our Facebook page.

How can I transfer photos to my Kindle? - Telegraph.co.uk

I was given a Kindle Fire HD as a Christmas gift. When traveling, holidays and so on, I usually take a laptop and each day backup photos from our digital cameras to the laptop. The Reasons for getting the Kindle was to save weight by taking Fewer books with me, and leave the laptop at home. However, I have been unable find a way to transfer photos from the cameras to the Kindle without going through a PC, can it be done?

Whoever chose the Kindle was badly misinformed, if it was being sold as a laptop replacement. It is Primarily a device for downloading and displaying media sold by Amazon. To be fair it can be persuaded, albeit reluctantly, to do some of the things a normal Android tablet computer can do but That does not include the USB hosting. This is the Feature That Allows most Android tablets to copy files from memory cards and sticks via a simple and inexpensive OTG (On The Go) adapter cable. Some users have managed to hack the Kindle Fire HD’s firmware and operating system to give it this kind of functionality but it is a complex and risky procedure.

suggest That You sell or pass the Kindle Fire on to someone who wants an e-book reader and media device, and replace it with a proper Android tablet. It shouldhave a minimum of 16GB on board memory, support for USB hosting and, ideally, a built-in SD (or micro SD) memory card reader. You can moonrise transfer and manage your photo files using ES File Explorer, free from Google Play, and all of your e-book needs will be met by the free Kindle app, or free e-reader apps like Aldiko, Better World Books, Cool Reader and FB Reader.
