Amazon Announced todaythat its Kindle Fire HD tablet offerings will rocket from availability in just seven markets (U.S., UK, Germany, France, Spain, Italy and Japan) to 170 + countries in mid-June. The 7 “and 8.9″ Amazon Kindle Fire HD models have enjoyed great success in the consumer market, as Forrester predicted They would even before the first device was released in November 2011.
The move to expand geographically makes sense, as Amazon Continues to capitalize on its core strength – its content + device + services value proposition – into consumer markets. Perhaps less obviously, though, the Kindle Fire HD has turned out to be something of a stealth competitor in the bring-your-own-device (BYO) space.
In a survey of information workers in the U.S., Canada, UK, France, and Germany – fielded from February to April 2013 – we found That, among Those Who say They use a tablet at least weekly for work:
Amazon’s Kindle Fire ranks # 3 overall among tablets used for work. At nine per cent of information workers in aggregate across Those five markets, the Kindle Fire ranks behind overwhelming market leader Apple iPad (53 per cent) and second-place player Samsung Galaxy (18 per cent). Samsung Galaxy is explicitly targeted at enterprises and business use (in addition to its more consumer-flavored offerings), so some of its market share comes from company-issued devices (rather than from BYO). Amazon’s third-place finish is pretty impressive for a consumer-oriented tablet with strong origins in ebooks and media. Among American information workers, the Amazon Kindle Fire ties for # 2. At 15 per cent of U.S. information workers, the Amazon Kindle Fire ties with Samsung’s Galaxy for second place among tablets used at work. The tablet does not have quite as strong a presence in the UK, France, or Germany (and isn’ta yet available in Canada), but its positio n in the U.S. is a leading indicator of work usage elsewhere.

The Kindle Fire’s success in workplaces rests squarely on BYO Behaviours, since the device isn’ta solar Directly to enterprises. But the Kindle Fire HD does have some basic work-related functionality, as Amazon Describes on this page: Support for ActiveSync (and thus Exchange email and calendars); Skype app; WebEx; VPN; and a preloaded Office Suite app to view Microsoft Office documents . There’s overpriced a 4G LTE option on some models, Which Allows mobile parity with Apple’s iPad and the iPad Mini devices.
Given the available size categories, it’s unlikely thatusers are doing heavy computing. Communications and content consumption are the most likely scenarios These workers are Achieving. Amazon’s Kindle Fire HD tablets, released in the U.S. last year, are now finally shipping to Australian buyers – and with them, access to Amazon’s Appstore.

We do not have a full-color E Ink e-reader yet, but the next best thing is a small LCD tablet. There are Several of These on the market in Australia, including Kobo’s offering, the Arc. Amazon’s Android Kindle Fire range has heretofore been off limits to Australian shipping addresses since its launch in September 2011.
Now, the web retail giant has Announced That it will be shipping the two latest versions of its tablet, the Kindle Fire HD 7 “and the Kindle Fire HD 8.9″, to Australia on 13 June 2013.
Both models are available in 16GB and a 32GB version, with the 7-inch model coming in at U.S. $ 214 and U.S. $ 244, and the 8.9-inch model at U.S. $ 284 and U.S. $ 314, respectively. Neither model will be available in the cheaper Kindle with Special Offers version, Which shows advertising and sponsored screensavers.
Both models also have a high-resolution display, with the 7-inch model at 720p and the 8.9 inch at 1080p.

NEW YORK: Online retail titan Amazon Announced Thursday it is expanding sales of its Kindle tablet computers to “over 170 countries and territories around the world,” and its Appstore in nearly 200 countries.
“Kindle Fire HD is the number one best-selling item in the world for Amazon since its launch, and we’re thrilled to make it available to even more customers around the globe today,” said Dave Limp, vice president at Amazon Kindle.
“Not only does the Kindle Fire feature advanced hardware, it’s overpriced a service. When combined with our content ecosystem, great email and browsing, and top-rated customer service, we hope people around the world will agree That Kindle Fire HD is the best tablet for an incredible price. “
Amazon said the Kindle Fire, Which starts in the U.S. market at U.S. $ 159, will start shipping to the additional countries by June 13. Up to now it had been sold outside the U.S. only in Britain, Germany, France, Spain and Japan.
The company said its Amazon Appstore “is now available to millions of customers in nearly 200 countries,” offering games, books, and other content. Amazon sells apps for the Kindle, but overpriced for PCs and other Android phones and devices.

Kindle Worlds Lets Authors Publish Fan Fiction - At Dubious Cost - Wired

Those of you furiously polishing your meticulously researched and beautifully written Gossip Girl fanfic novel, rejoice – Amazon has created a platform whereby you can not only publish it, but possibly make money from it. Whether you’ll want to use platform That remains to be seen.
Yesterday, the House That Built Bezos Announced the launch of Kindle Worlds, a digital publishing platform where writers can publish fan fiction under official licenses. Right now, Amazon’s deal is limited to Gossip Girl , Pretty Little Liars , and The Vampire Diaries – all from Warner Bros. ‘Alloy Entertainment – but it promises more to come.
On the surface, it seems like a sweet deal. After years of conflict over the copyright issues and ethical conundrums of non-licensed works, fan writers finally have an official OK to not only write, but possibly profit fromtheir work.
Which means, of course, thatthere must be a catch – or catches, as it turns out. Author John Scalzi was quick to voice concerns about the publishing agreement and the program’s potential impact on professional writers working in the media tie-in market. Wired spoke with attorney Jeff Trexler, who Expressed similar concerns, pointing to a clause in Amazon’s contact That grants Amazon and the licensor rights to the text of the stories and any original elements They Might containers.
“In short, if your fan fiction includes new elements That catch on with the general public, it’s likely That you’ll not be able to profit from them outside of the stories That you write,” he said. “For example , Time Warner could launch a movie series based on a character you created and not owe you a dime. While the terms state That You Retain the copyright, you overpriced give Amazon an exclusive license to your original work and Amazon in turn licenses your work to Time Warner into a license That Provides nothing for you. “
Further More, says Trexler, if you DECIDED to keep using That character outside of the Kindle Worlds, you’d be viola ting the terms of your contract.
But what do the fans have to say? Betsy Rosenblatt is a professor at Whittier Law School, and chair of the legal committee of the Organization for Transformative Works, a nonprofit organization dedicated to Providing access to and preserving fan works and culture. She said the Organization is pleased to see Amazon taking an not entered the fan works, but, like Trexler and Scalzi, she has reservations about the rights underwriters would be signing away, and about the restrictions on content: Amazon’s list of content guidelines nix pornography and crossovers, as well as some more nebulous and Subjective Qualities like “offensive content” and “poor customer experience.”
To Rosenblatt, Those restrictions underline the importance of unrestricted fan platforms, like OTW’s Archive of Our Own, Which “allow fans to express the full range of Their creativity and appreciate the creativity of other fans through fair use.”
Indeed, given the limited licenses, draconian content guidelines, and dubious contracts, it’s hard to imagine fans abandoning open platforms for a far-from-guaranteed paycheck. While Kindle Worlds is sure to Attract a fair number of fan writers excited at the prospect of working under official license and maybe even making a buck or two off their stories, for many, the most appealing route to publication will remainings the one taken by Fifty Shades of Grey author EL James: just file off the serial numbers.

Canadians will finally be able to purchase Amazon’s Kindle Fire HD tablet starting June 13, two years after the first generation of the device Became available in the U.S., the company Announced Thursday.
The online retailing giant Began taking pre-orders for the tablets Thursday. They will come in two screen sizes – seven inches and 8.9 inches – and can be downloaded with 16 GB or 32 GB of memory. The seven-inch, 16 GB model will sell for $ 214.

Amazon's Kindle Worlds will pay writers to write fan fiction - CNET
The company’s new publishing platform willprovide royalties to writers who fashion Their Own Stories après Existing books, TV shows, and more.

Unveiled Wednesday, the Kindle Worlds is a new publishing venture from Amazon That promises to reward both writers and the original rights holders for new fiction based on Existing stories and characters.

Authors who create works of at least 10,000 words in length will receive 35 percent of the net revenue based on the actual sales price, with royalties paid each month. Those who write shorter pieces between 5,000 and 10,000 words will receive a digital royalty of 20 percent of the sales price.
As the program is just getting off the ground, Amazon has signed up one rights holder so far – Warner Bros. Television Group’s Alloy Entertainment division. This agreement paves the way for fan fiction based on the “Gossip Girl” series by Cecily von Ziegesar, “Pretty Little Liars” by Sara Shepard, and “Vampire Diaries” by LJ Smith.
Amazon said it plans to announce more license agreements soon with an eye toward fan fiction based on books, TV shows, movies, music, and even games.
“Our goal with the Kindle Worlds ice to create a home for authors to build on the Worlds we license, and give readers more stories from the Worlds They enjoy,” Philip Patrick, director of business development and publisher of Kindle Worlds, said in a statement. “We look forward to announcing additional World licensing deals in the coming weeks.”
The Worlds Kindle store is expected to open its doors in June with more than 50 stories, some from award-winning authors. The Kindle Worlds self-service submission platform willalso launch at That time, allo wing anyone to submit a piece of fan fiction.

The Worlds Kindle store will launch next month with 50 commissioned works, and at That point, the self- publishing platform will open up to the general public.Given the popularity of the three licensed properties, Amazon can expect a lot of submissions. On the “Vampire Diaries” section of FanFiction.net, authors have posted more than 17,000 works, and we’re sure many of Those authors would love to have the opportunity to get paid for Their teamwork. And fans of other fictional universes May overpriced get the same opportunity, as Amazon says it plans to continue Adding more licenses.
While we Imagine That only a small fraction of fan-fiction works will make any real money through Kindle Worlds, it’s easy to see why Amazon wants to get into this business. The “Fifty Shades of Grey” series started out as fan fiction based on the “Twilight” series, though it was able to be commercially published Because it diverged from the “Twilight” universe into its characters and setting. The runaway success of That series has obviously convinced many in the publishing industry t hatthere’s some talent lurking On those fan-fiction forums. Sometimes a writer Creates a universe so compelling That others feel the need to join and help flesh out That world withtheir own tribute fiction. And sometimes you make something crappy like Gossip Girl and loads of people want to write using Those characters and That world anyway. Now Amazon is Introducing a way to let writers profit fromtheir fan fiction, via “Kindle Worlds.”
Worlds joins Kindle Singles and Kindle Serials as a way for authors to earn money from digital publishing, and the best part Is that in this case you do not even have to be all that creative – the idea is to let fans create stories around original properties from other authors, offering them up for purchase on the Kindle bookstore. Amazon then pays out royalties to both the original rights holder, as well as to the fan fiction author, with the author making around 35 percent of all net revenue for works over 10,000 words.
There’s overpriced a new revenue model Aimed at shorter works, Which would be between 5,000 and 10,000 words and will typically sell for under a dollar. Under this scheme, the author’s cut will be a digital royalties of 20 percent.
Fanfic writers can sign up now at the Official Amazon Kindle Worlds website, and the company Expects to launch the Worlds storefront in June. There will be over 50 commissioned works included in the store at launch, Amazon says, and then it’ll be launching its self-serve submission platform for all authors to add Their Own completed works for consideration.
This is a very shrewd business move on the part of Amazon, since it leverages Existing popular properties in a way That would never be possible with just one series author (or even a small list of a few running a title), and since it taps into the Existing massive market for fan-created fiction That already exists on the net. Heck, I’ve still got an extremely bad and extremely long Star Wars extended universe manuscript hidden in a closet somewhere. If I can FindThatBand, read my childish scrawl well enough to transcribe it, and if Amazon ever secured Those rights from Disney, I’d Consider throwing it up on Worlds for some easy cash.
Amazon says it’s in the process of Securing licensing deals from a variety of sources, including television, movie, books, games and music properties. The only question I really have about this to be honest is why did this take so long to happen? If you want a near-bottomless supply of written content, fanfic is where it’s at.

My Late Mother's Broken Kindle Leaves Me Brokenhearted, Amazon Goes ... - The Consumerist

Consumerist reader K. had one very important reminder of her late mother – her mom’s beloved Kindle. She says her mom treated it like a sensitive piece of electronic equipment, and really loved it. Every night When K. went to bed, she would read a book on the device and says it always made her smile and think of her mother. But when That’s Kindle broke, it seemed Those sentimental moments would be over for good.
K. That writes Although she had put the Kindle away peacefully care after using it one night, away from foot traffic and heat and inside its protective case, When She turned it on the next day the resolution was all mucked up. The usual cover picture of a random author (in this case, Louisa Mae Alcott) was shady and blurry, and there were ominous, “Etch-a-Sketch” lines on the screen.
After trying a 20-second reset recommended in the Kindle Help section, it still did not work. So K. called customer service and spoke with a rep who insisted That the Kindle was out of warranty, so he could not do anything about it. Further More, he said “that They would not even consider Accepting it for repair, and That According To his technicians and developers, I MUST have done something to damage it. I must have dropped it, stepped on it or gotten it wet. “
Her Assurances That She had not done so fell on deaf ears, That she had “put the Kindle in the place it had safely lived for almost a year and it had spontaneously done this itself.” All he offered was to sell her a new Kindle at “a very good price.” That was not going to work for K, but luckily, she came to Consumerist.
I did a bit of research and found a couple of sites, outside the Amazon, where owners of the Kindle Keyboard had had the exact same experience as I had. (Whether Miss Alcott is implicated here is not clear.) Their screens had frozen, the lines Showed up. So, I came to Consumerist.com, searched EECBs, and managed to compose what I hoped was a direct email to Amazon’s CEO. I used two different addresses, and then, by Consumerist’s advice, I waited.
I did not expect even a response, or, at minimum, some auto reply claptrap. What I got, to my surprise and great delight, was a response! It was from a woman named [redacted], who told me That while she could not replace my Kindle Keyboard, she was going to credit my account for the price of a brand new base model Kindle, Which I could use to purchase the base model , or apply it to a different model.
She had kind, compassionate words for me, and seemed to Realize my situation was not one That would be best ignored. So, while I had really’ve become broken-hearted over losing my mother’s Kindle, Amazon really came through, With that EECB, and responded generously and kindly.
It just goes to show thateven in the face of what would seem like a dead-end situation, if you can reach even one kind-hearted person at a company, your Efforts could be rewarded. Much better than simply ranting and raving over the injustices served upon you by a customer service rep.
We’re glad K. will still be able to read and think of her mother, so way to go, Amazon.

Wingo Easy-Hold Kindle Case Would Be Perfect For The iPad Mini - Cult of Mac
Before you say anything: Yes, I know this is a case for the Kindle and not for an iPad or other Apple device. But I do not care Because a) it’s super cool and Should be Made for the iPad mini and b) you probably own a Kindle anyway.
It’s called the Wingo, and it adds a pair of pop-out wings to your e-reader.
The Wingo is a lightweight, hollow ABS plastic case with a soft-touch exterior, plus a pair of wings Which slowly open out at the touch of a button. It’s a little like a kids toy airplane, only more comfortable to hold.
And comfort is the key here: the case is designed to relieve stress on your hands and fingers cause by gripping the Kindle too tight. The wings let the device rest on your finger so you do not have to do any gripping at all.
This would Clearly make a great design for the iPad mini, too. The mini is light enough to be held in one hand, but the skinny bezels and slippery surface make gripping tricky.
The Wingo is currently seeking funding on Kickstarter, so it’s likely to be a while before we see anything for the iPad, if ever. So I’m taking things (literally) into my own hands and planning to make my own. I figure a strip of self-adhesive velcro across the back of the iPad might do the trick, letting me stick on a horizontal bar Whenever I like. If it works out well, expect a how-to post sometime this week …

Project Kindle Hosts Inaugural Dance Marathon In Santa Clarita Valley - KHTS Radio
Non-profit Project Kindle has been operating a number of retreats and programs for disabled and mentally challenged Physically and children since 1998, including Their camp in Hord Ville, Nebraska.

Project Kindle’s main office is in the Santa Clarita Valley, and Founder and Director Eva Payne has long wanted to Specifically victim programs for local youth, in addition to Their National Camp Kindle.
This year, Project Kindle hosted SCV Their inaugural Dance Marathon on Friday, May 17, a fundraiser designed to get youth Involved in raising money For their peers with Disabilities.
Westfield Valencia Town Center donated space and several bands Such as False Puppets, DJ Beatz and Slater donated Their time for the event.
“We hope to make it an annual fundraiser That really involves the teens here in Santa Clarita,” Payne said. “There’s so many events That really focus on adults here in the valley, and not as many charity events where teens can Get involved and really give back.”
Payne’s daughter Emmi Payne, a 7th degree at Rio Norte Junior High, helped publicize the event.
“I was so happy to help Promote the event on my campus and through social media,” she said.
Though this is Project Kindle’s first Dance Marathon in the SCV, They have hosted similar events with Edison High School, Agoura High School and UCLA. Final totals for the SCV Dance Marathon are still being calculated, but previous events have raised as much as $ 100,000.

Partially funded by the Boston Scientific Foundation, the day camp will take place at Placerita Nature Center, June 17-21, and will focus on associate wing kids in math, science, music and art.
